Think about the last time you changed your mind in an argument. Not softened, not conceded a small point, but actually reversed a position you’d been defending. If you’re like most people, you’re struggling to come up with an example, and that itself is worth sitting with. We argue constantly. We change our minds almost never. And the standard explanation, that the other side just didn’t have good enough evidence, cannot be right every time.

Here is a more uncomfortable possibility. In most arguments, the reasoning you’re doing is not the thing that produced your position. It’s the thing you’re using to defend a position you already hold, for reasons you never examined. The conclusion came first. The logic came second, sent out to make the conclusion look like the product of thought.

This feels wrong from the inside, which is exactly what you’d expect. Nobody experiences themselves as reasoning backward. You experience yourself weighing considerations and arriving somewhere. But there’s a body of research, built over decades and from several directions at once, suggesting the arrival usually happens first, and the weighing is a performance staged afterward for an audience of one.

Start with the simplest version. In the 1950s, Solomon Asch sat a person at a table with several others and showed the group a line, then asked which of three other lines matched it. The answer was obvious. A child could do it. But the others at the table were actors, and on certain rounds they all confidently gave the same wrong answer. The real subject, hearing everyone else say something plainly false, now had to choose between the evidence of his own eyes and the unanimous voice of the room.

About a third of the time, people went with the room. Three out of four conformed at least once. Only a quarter held the line every time. And when Asch ran the task with no group pressure, people got it right virtually always, which means the errors weren’t about eyesight. They were about the cost of being the one person who disagrees.

The usual lesson drawn from Asch is that people cave to peer pressure, and that’s true as far as it goes. But look closer at what conformity requires. To sit there and say the wrong line matches, a person must do something to the contradiction between what they see and what they’re saying. Some reported knowing the group was wrong and going along anyway. But others, when interviewed, had started to doubt their own eyes. The pressure didn’t just change their answer. It reached back and adjusted their perception to fit the answer they’d already decided to give. The conclusion, agree with the room, came first. The seeing rearranged itself to match.

That’s social pressure operating on perception. Now go further in, past the group and into a single skull.

In the 1960s and 70s, neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga studied patients whose two brain hemispheres had been surgically separated to treat severe epilepsy. Because the hemispheres could no longer talk to each other, he could show information to one half of the brain without the other half knowing. What he found is one of the strangest and most important results in the history of psychology.

In one version, he showed a snow scene to the patient’s right hemisphere and a chicken claw to the left. Then he asked the patient to point at a matching image. The left hand, controlled by the right hemisphere that had seen the snow, pointed to a shovel. Correct. But the part of the brain that produces speech lives in the left hemisphere, which had only seen the chicken claw and knew nothing about any snow. So when Gazzaniga asked the patient why he’d pointed at the shovel, the speaking brain could not say “I don’t know,” even though “I don’t know” was the truth. Instead, it invented a reason on the spot: the shovel was for cleaning out the chicken coop.

The patient was not lying. He believed it. His brain had performed an action for a reason he had no access to, and rather than sit with the blankness, the verbal part of his mind manufactured a confident explanation and handed it to him as fact. Gazzaniga called this module the interpreter, and its job is to narrate the self, to spin a plausible story about why you did what you did, whether or not it has the faintest idea of the real cause.

Here is the part that should stop you. The interpreter is not a quirk of split-brain patients. Their severed hemispheres just made it visible. It’s running in you right now, all the time, and it is very good at its job. You act, you react, you land on a position, and a smooth voice inside supplies the reason, arriving so quickly and so seamlessly that you mistake it for the thing that came first. The confabulation feels identical to genuine reasoning. There is no internal signal that distinguishes them.

This is what the Sinclair line is really about, the one about it being hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on not understanding it. We usually read it as a claim about dishonesty, a man pretending not to grasp what he secretly does. But it’s stranger and more true than that. The salary doesn’t make him lie. It makes him sincerely fail to understand. His interpreter, working on behalf of his rent and his mortgage and his sense of himself as a competent professional, builds him an honest-feeling case for the conclusion his circumstances require, and he believes every word. Incentives come first. The ideology that justifies them follows, and it doesn’t feel like justification. It feels like insight.

Once you see this pattern you start finding it everywhere, and the finding is uncomfortable, because it does not exempt you. That’s the catch built into the whole idea. The moment you think “yes, this explains why those people believe what they believe,” your interpreter has already done it again, generating a satisfying conclusion, you see clearly, they don’t, and dressing it in the language of reason. There is no vantage point above your own machinery from which to run this audit cleanly. The tool you’d use to catch the confabulation is the confabulator.

So, what do you do with this? Less than you’d like. You cannot decide to stop the interpreter from spinning, any more than the split-brain patient could stop his from inventing the chicken coop. The machinery is not optional, and it does not have an off switch.

But you can change what you trust. When you notice your reasons arriving fully formed and suspiciously fast, especially in defense of something you’d hate to be wrong about, you can hold them a little more loosely. Not because they’re necessarily false, but because speed and confidence, it turns out, are not evidence of anything. The interpreter produces them either way. You can learn to treat the smoothness of your own explanation as a reason for suspicion rather than trust, which is close to the opposite of how it feels.

And you can watch for the tell. The next time an argument makes you tighten, the next time the counterpoints assemble themselves before the other person has finished talking, you can notice that the assembling started too early to be a response to anything they said. That reaction was already loaded. What you’re doing now is not weighing their point. It’s defending a position that was in place before they opened their mouth and reaching for whatever will hold it up.

That noticing won’t make you objective. Nothing will. There is no version of you that reasons from nowhere, no clean seeing underneath the machinery. The reasons will keep coming second. The most you get is the occasional half-second of suspicion, the small gap in which you catch the performance mid-sentence and remember that the conclusion got there first. It isn’t freedom. It’s just a little more honesty about what’s actually running the show, which was never going to be the calm, weighing judge you imagined, and was always the lawyer, already briefed, already certain, already building the case.
